With 36% of the Vote - Silvana V. - Õlfus, Iceland

We were on our way to visit the Þingvellir National Park in Iceland and we stopped at a geothermal power plant near Õlfus. The landscape is pretty stark, with dark volcanic rocks, incredibly blue sky, lots of water and steam. With my iPhone, I was taking photos of the landscape and what I believe is a cooling pond, and steam being released... with pure beginner’s luck the timing of one of the photos was such that the steam and its reflection appeared like the point of an arrow over the pond before starting to dissipate.

We were at a wildlife preserve on the Atlantic Coast roughly 800 miles south of Buenas Aires. I caught these two love birds in several romantic poses leading up to this one. This photo was taken with a cell phone at the Punta Tombo Penguin Rookery, Argentina.

With 28% of the Vote - Don B. - Sagrada Familia Ceiling, Barcelona, Spain

The picture we submitted to the FJP contest was taken of the ceiling of the La Sagrada Familia during our visit to Spain this summer. This amazing cathedral is a must see in Barcelona. Designed by Antoni Gaudi, construction began in 1884 but is still yet to be completed. Our tour guide said, that depending on who you ask, it will be another 6 to 10 years before it is finished. The church was designed by Gaudi to honor Jesus' family, with towers representing him, his mother, the four evangelists and the twelve apostles. He viewed the natural world as perfect, a creation from which he drew inspiration. For example, the massive columns that support the ceiling are circular at their base but then branch out like massive trees as they ascend to the sky. His intent was to have the eyes of the viewers of this architectural masterpiece, drawn upward from earth below to the heavens above. It is truly breathtaking.
